Amazing food and little known history in Southeast Kansas
There’s a particular kind of magic to a town that still waves at strangers. That was our first impression of Pittsburg, Kansas—a community rich with heart, history, and a hint of sweet nostalgia. Nestled in the southeastern corner of the Sunflower State, Pittsburg isn’t flashy or fast-paced. Instead, it invites you to slow down and soak in its blend of small-town warmth and historic grit.
A beautiful day in Girard, Kansas calls for crafting and coffee. C4 is a cozy little coffee shop located in the heart of Girard. It is Christian-owned and has vendors inside for people to shop about.
Back in the days when folks dressed up for Sunday dinner and fried chicken was king, Crawford County, Kansas, had its own version of the Wild West. But instead of gunslingers and cattle rustlers, fried chicken joints waged battle—each claiming the crown for the crispiest, juiciest plate in town.
Every TV show that features a slice of Americana often serves it up in the form of a diner or small country café. Usually with a side of apple pie. However, the on-screen version of a perfect small-town American Cafe is often a whole lot harder to find than one might expect.
Some silly people may say you can’t go home again. However, that definitely doesn’t apply if you plan on opening a restaurant designed to knock the culinary socks off the entire county. Which is precisely what Frontenac Friends Kelley (Terlip) and her husband Mike Gingras have done with their brand new restaurant Bushel & a Peck .
The Pitt is a bar with great food. It’s also a restaurant that serves alcohol. It’s a live music venue, and it’s a place to sit and watch pretty much anything you want on the big screens. It’s really just whatever you want it to be.
Sweet dreams are made of these. A day with the grandparents. A stroll down main street to the local soda shop. Candy. Ice cream. All the sugar.

Kevin Fry and his mother, Denise Grasso, have owned and operated Pairott Head since December of 2016. They had talked before about owning a business together, but they didn’t expect to sell alcohol.
To answer the question heard all around Pittsburg … no, it’s not just toast. The full menu includes a variety of items from salads and soup to gelato and “Big A$$ Cinnamon Rolls”.
