We’ve now visited this region twice with our kids, once for a full weekend getaway and again as a day trip, and both trips have made me appreciate this corner of Kansas even more.

At only 13 miles long, Southeast Kansas doesn’t get nearly enough credit on the Route 66 conversation. But that’s exactly what makes it special. It’s compact, it’s weird, it’s kitschy, and you can drive the whole thing in a day.

Located 11 miles north of Pittsburg, Arma is not just another Southeast Kansas one-time coal-mining town.
