In the heart of southeast Kansas, the small city of Pittsburg in Crawford County is not just known for its rich mining history and vibrant college-town atmosphere; it is also a culinary hotspot for one of America’s most cherished comfort foods: fried chicken. This popular dish has deep roots in the region, influenced by a blend of cultural traditions and family recipes passed down through generations.
Sure, Pittsburg State is the only university in the nation with a Gorilla mascot. But Pitt State has another bragging right: many academic programs and partnerships also are unique.

For as long as I’ve covered travel and tourism, I’ve heard people say that there’s nothing to do in Kansas. So I decided to spend several weeks exploring Kansas and I wasn’t quite prepared for all that I found simply detouring off the interstate.
Imagine the U.S. without polka. A nation without the waltz, or lager-style beer. Or worst of all, brats!
When I was in Pittsburg, Kansas recently I swung by this shop called Miners + Monroe Mercantile located on the main street (Broadway). They market itself as having a “carefully curated assortment of men’s apparel, apothecary, & lifestyle goods with a focus on quality.”
I had heard that The Mall Deli in Pittsburg, Kansas was a spot to grab some good food. It’s been in business since 1979 and I begged Chris with Explore Crawford County to show me the way.
I’m telling you Gastrofreaks — Big Brutus, Inc is so dang big. I guess that’s why it is the largest electric shovel in the whole stinkin’ world. It’s located in West Mineral, Kansas.
