Sitting down to a plate of crispy fried chicken is a Kansas tradition, especially in the southeast corner of the state, dating back to the early 1900s. 44 killed in Frontenac mining disaster on November 9, 1888
November 9 marks a somber anniversary in Southeast Kansas. In 1888, 44 men, ages 13-to-45, were killed in Frontenac in the state’s largest mine disaster. 10 nationalities were represented in the deaths: America, Austria, Belgium, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, and Scotland.
