Amazing food and little known history in Southeast Kansas
I live as far away from Pittsburg, Kansas, as a person can live and still be in Kansas. Even with the long drive, I visit the de facto capital of Southeast Kansas at least annually. I find something new every time I visit, and you’ll enjoy discovering Pittsburg, too.
This community was once part of the coal-mining industry. Today, you can experience coal mining in a fun way; a short road trip to Big Brutus is a must!

I was amazed by the variety of art, artists and fun dining options in Southeast Kansas. I saw murals, sculptures, a veteran’s wall and beautiful jewelry.
I grew up in a mining community, Pawnee, Illinois. Peabody # 10 located between Pawnee and Kincaid when it was open, was one of the largest coal mines in the world. So, it makes sense that I am interested in mining history both locally and far away.
Ask someone what would make a good day trip, and thoughts may stray to a ticketed attraction that draws thousands of visitors. A zoo, perhaps. Or a botanical garden. You won’t find those in Crawford County.
Yes, I’ve found a region in Kansas that has a good mix of road trip stops to keep a family entertained for a few days.
When it comes to enjoying so many of the picturesque sites that help make Pittsburg, Kansas, such a terrific place to live and work, there’s likely nothing more enticing than the Pittsburg State University (PSU) Walking Tour, which brings together virtually everything residents and visitors find appealing about this area.
Some breweries are only great a beer-making and fail at food. Drop the H Brewing Company nails both.
