This unassuming town proved to be a treasure trove of impressive experiences, from stunning murals to culinary spots that would rival any big city eatery. Not to spoil the surprise but we discovered Pittsburg is known for so much more than its famed gorillas and fried chicken!
Kansas is one of the best states for road trips. Several towns have embraced the art scene through murals, including Pittsburg.
I live as far away from Pittsburg, Kansas, as a person can live and still be in Kansas. Even with the long drive, I visit the de facto capital of Southeast Kansas at least annually. I find something new every time I visit, and you’ll enjoy discovering Pittsburg, too.
This community was once part of the coal-mining industry. Today, you can experience coal mining in a fun way; a short road trip to Big Brutus is a must!

I grew up in a mining community, Pawnee, Illinois. Peabody # 10 located between Pawnee and Kincaid when it was open, was one of the largest coal mines in the world. So, it makes sense that I am interested in mining history both locally and far away.

Now, the cluster of fried chicken houses in Crawford County in Southeast Kansas has inspired a fictional novel recently named Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club pick of the month and a New York Time’s Best Seller.
Yes, I’ve found a region in Kansas that has a good mix of road trip stops to keep a family entertained for a few days.
