Amazing food and little known history in Southeast Kansas
Every TV show that features a slice of Americana often serves it up in the form of a diner or small country café. Usually with a side of apple pie. However, the on-screen version of a perfect small-town American Cafe is often a whole lot harder to find than one might expect.
Some silly people may say you can’t go home again. However, that definitely doesn’t apply if you plan on opening a restaurant designed to knock the culinary socks off the entire county. Which is precisely what Frontenac Friends Kelley (Terlip) and her husband Mike Gingras have done with their brand new restaurant Bushel & a Peck .
This church goes back to what a church was at first in this country. A gathering place of support and love for the community. Instead of promising free tickets to heaven for donations you’ll find a group of people mixing, rolling, and cutting, homemade noodles. It’s the kind of place that you feel good going into.
For those who have never been to Crawford County, the 2022 Big Kansas Road Trip was an opportunity to see firsthand why our corner of the state is a little different than the rest of Kansas.

I was amazed by the variety of art, artists and fun dining options in Southeast Kansas. I saw murals, sculptures, a veteran’s wall and beautiful jewelry.
While Crawford County may be known nationally for its tasty fried chicken, another food could be even more popular in the area.
Since the 1930’s travelers have asked why fried chicken is so popular in the area. It’s a story about a delicious, inexpensive family meal, and survival.
